SONY PLACES LANDCARE FIRMLY IN THE PICTURE

So much good work is going on all over Australia through the hard work and dedication of landcare's "caring hands". But, as is too often the case with volunteer work, these caring hands can be very much unseen.

Now, thanks to Sony and Landcare Australia, more and more of Australia's unsung heroes will be able to receive the recognition they deserve.

Sony has donated 56 state-of-the-art digital cameras to Landcare groups all over the country - one per Natural Resource Management region! This will allow these groups to record and communicate their achievements, ambitions and lessons learnt to other Landcare groups as well as to the broader community

The Mount Roland Rivercare Catchment Inc (MRRCI) is one of the lucky groups that received a camera for their work, including recording and monitoring of past rivercare work.

"Before and after images of river care projects are a great way to show people what effect the group is having on the rivers in our catchment. An exmaple of this is the Browns Creek Clean Up where willows were removed from a section where they were clogging the waterway" says Richard Sands, Rivercare Coordinator for Mount Roland Rivercare.

Sony joined forces with Landcare Australia in 2002 to help promote an ethic of environmental responsibility to its staff, suppliers, retailers and customers. Having staged a series of successful Landcare Enviro-Challenges that engaged staff in on-ground environmental works, Sony has now turned its attention to equipping Landcare with the skills and means to move into the 21st century.

"Sony has a proud tradition of sustainability, and much of our research and development reflects this," said Shusuke Oshima, Managing Director, Sony Australia. "We recognise environmental concerns to be as important as financial or social ones, and try to provide corporate leadership in this area."

Groups went in the running to win a Sony camera when they registered with the National Landcare Directory, via Landcare Online. This Directory is the first of its kind in Australia and hopes to revolutionise the way Landcare, Coastcare, Bushcare, Indigenous and other volunteer community groups communicate with each other, as well as with government and industry stakeholders.
